Treatment for UK and EU Patients

Treatment for UK and EU Patients

Meliva provides medical services for international patients under:

  • the S2 Scheme (United Kingdom only)
  • the EU Cross-Border Healthcare Directive (2011/24/EU) for EU/EEA patients.

What is the S2 Scheme?

The S2 Scheme allows patients insured under the UK NHS to receive planned medical treatment abroad, subject to prior approval.

Who Can Use the S2 Scheme?

  • Patients covered by the UK NHS
  • Patients with prior approval from NHS England
  • Planned (non-emergency) treatment only

How Does the Process Work?

  1. The patient applies for an S2 form through NHS England
  2. After approval, treatment is arranged with an authorised healthcare provider
  3. Treatment is provided according to the approved S2 form

What Is Cross-Border Healthcare?

Under the EU Cross-Border Healthcare Directive (2011/24/EU), patients insured in an EU or EEA country may receive planned medical treatment in another EU/EEA country.

How Does It Work?

  1. The patient pays for medical services at Meliva Clinic
  2. After treatment, Meliva Clinic prepares and provides the required medical documentation and invoices and supports the patient throughout the reimbursement process

Based on our experience, most patients successfully receive reimbursement for their treatment costs.
Please note that the final reimbursement decision is made by the patient’s national health authority.
